Burning Daylight 7“

B-Side: Permanent Make-up 3:04
Release: 2022/07/01 – orange vinyl –

During a lockdown in 2021, Tom Obnoxious from Munich-Sendling called Fab Stay Gold in Vienna’s 7th District and Phil Zéro in Munich-Giesing. He had composed, recorded and pre-produced some songs. Phil wrote English lyrics to these tunes and sang them in the vocal booth of an abandoned studio in the outback of Munich. Fab created lead guitars and recorded them in his home studio. For mixing and mastering, the songs jetted through the internet to North London and back.
Since their teenage years, the three band members of the new „punk rock sound system“ AMAZING GREY have been playing in a lot of bands – including a few years together in The Gumbabies from Munich, whose entire material was recently rereleased via Still Unbeatable Records on all the usual streaming platforms.
But this new band sounds different from what they did before. Perhaps warmer and more compact in places, possibly more experimental and extremely catchy at the same time. In any case, AMAZING GREY continues to let you hear which elements the three involved love most from four decades of punk rock: 70s New York glam meets 80s SoCal skate and surf meets power pop and post-punk from the British Isles.
With AMAZING GREY’s debut 7-inch, the first two tracks from this new creative process are released on orange vinyl on labels from Munich and Düsseldorf. Enjoy!

Interview with Gregory Mclaughlin, lead vocalist of New Wave / Miami Punk band THE FRONT formed in 1980.

The Front – the band that time forgot. Why?

The band was featured on a compilation record of South Florida bands called “The Land That Time Forgot”.
So the title of the documentary is sort of a companion to that record.
Also the band was never signed…came very close but broke up before that could happen.
As time went by you would hear about other bands of that era like the Eat, Charlie Pickett etc…however at the time The Front were one of the top bands.
The Front targeted the college audience rather than the locals.
As a result they were more or less under the radar historically.

What were your musical influences when you started the band?

Influenced ranged from Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys to Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, Devo etc.
The Residents are a favorite of the group.
We only played original tunes. Never played a cover…not even in rehearsal.
We played everywhere there was a stage….small joints to concert halls in South Florida.
We were courted by several major labels…however broke up before any deal was signed….in hindsight that is a blessing since we still own our songs which makes these limited edition releases possible.

Why did you break up?
We broke up on a creative high…we simply got tired of each other… no big blow out…we remained friends for most part… till 3 passed.

The Criteria Sessions 7” vinyl has just been released in a very limited edition of just 150 copies. Why did it take so long to bring out these original tracks from 1980/81?

The Band is no longer an active entity…these releases are legacy records, released in small limited editions.
Produced by surviving member Gregory McLaughlin songwriter and vocalist for the band.

It seems that you have more unreleased original recordings from that time.  Are there plans for more vinyl releases?

Yes, there are plans to release more of the catalog on vinyl.
Newest release: The Front Aluminum Room scheduled for release early August.

Linear Descent – Sheila / This Man´s Disgrace 7″

(Pomo Records R-6816 / ℗ 1982)

Recorded At – Triangle Recording

Linear Descent was formed in early 1981 by three good-natured University of Washington fisheries science students and a somewhat smarmy University of Seattle journalism student. Unfortunately for anyone interested in pursuing a musical career in Seattle at this time, the music scene was still stubbornly rutted in its dark ages, where absolutely nobody got signed between Heart in 1975 and Queensryche in 1984.

Despite dismal odds of success, the band gave it a fair attempt, playing over 75 shows in the Seattle area. They played iconic venues such as the Showbox Theater and Rainbow Tavern. They played fraternity parties, Chinese restaurants, and dive bars, including one venue that the owner burned down for the insurance money and another where water from the toilets often leaked onto the dance floor and was where the band’s two guitarists met the actual Sheila for the first time. Basically, Linear Descent played anywhere where there was even the slightest pretense of being paid.

In February 1982, the band recorded their only single “Sheila/This Man’s Disgrace” at Triangle Studios, which in 1986 became Reciprocal Studios and was where most Seattle grunge bands did their first recordings. The record received favorable reviews in the Pacific Northwest music press, got regular airplay on KCMU (now KEXP) and KJET, and sold tens of copies in local record stores.

Encouraged, the band submitted the single to a number of Los Angeles area record labels. All shot the band down except for Geffen Records, where one representative showed lukewarm interest but was soon fired. Tired of replacing drummers (the original drummer quit twice, one replacement quit and another was fired for drumming incompetence) Linear Descent disbanded in October 1982.

Background story: Eddie Mooney and the Grave – song by song: No.10: „Down The Drain“

Track 10 of 10 of the Eddie Mooney and the Grave ft Mike Rowbottom and Rick Medlock vinyl collection: „Down The Drain“ was recorded in Manchester in February 2020, another brand new song, released along with the vintage tracks on the „Lost 1979 Studio Recordings“ EP on Malte Buhr’s German Still Unbeatable label in March 2020. Another satire on the British political situation it came out just as the world went into lockdown, so the title was somewhat prophetic. The band returned to the original three piece line up with Coventry’s legendary Ricky Medlock on drums, original guitarist Mike Rowbottom on guitar and myself on bass and lead vocals. Ricky did the fantastic drum track without even hearing the track – I told him to drum like the „Friends“ theme!
And soon we shall be recording and gigging again…watch this space!

Background story: Eddie Mooney and the Grave – song by song: No.9: „Dennis Votes“

Track 9 of 10 of the Eddie Mooney and the Grave ft Mike Rowbottom vinyl collection: „Dennis Votes“ was recorded in Manchester in September 2019, a brand new song, released along with the vintage tracks on the „Lost 1978 Demo Tapes“ EP on Malte Buhr’s German Still Unbeatable label in October 2019. The song is a satire on a the stereotypical voter „Dennis“, seen at the end of the promo video clutching his EU Referendum voting card. The video featured original guitarist Mike Rowbottom and myself on bass and lead vocals. There wasn’t an actual drummer on the track as such. Instead the drums were sampled from the Damned’s „New Rose“ and „Hold Tight“ by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich!
